The custom badges show on product cards and usually look like the following screenshot.
To enable them in our Shopify themes first:
1 - Create a new product metafield with the type of Single line of text like on the following screenshot. The metafield namespace/key should be custom.badge
Then, for each product to which you want to add a badge, add the badge text and an optional color value, as shown in the following screenshot. You can just add the text if you prefer. E.g. New, but if you need a custom color for the badge, add it after the text using a "|" vertical pipe character to separate them.
